Naples
It’s in the shade of the perturbing and feared Vesubio
that appears the gulf of Naples, where the tourist breathes
the most intense spirit of the Italian south. The city
is an interesting monumental centre, presided over by
the Plebiscito Square, a semicircular theatre chamber
floor with the church of San Francisco Di Paola in the
middle.
From there, starts an interesting route by the most representative
and gorgeous places of Naples, beginning by the Royal
palace, constructed under the mandate of the viceroy of
the city Fernandez Ruiz de Castro, and with an interesting
Palatine chapel, work of Francesco Antonio Picchiatti.
In the piazza Trieste and Trento is the church of San
Ferdinando, with numerous frescos, stuccos and funeral
monuments; the Umberto gallery, dominated by a show window
that culminate at 57 meters of height, and the Theatre
San Carlo, a majestic monument destined to perpetuate
the reign of the Bourbons.
It is impossible to avoid a visit to the Royal fortress
with the Palatine chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara and
the arc of the Triumph that arises between two solid towers
that take step to the castle patio. Surrounding the historical
center is Spaccanapoli, one of the oldest districts of
the city and mirror of the life of the Neapolitan town.
Here, are the monasteries of Santi Severino and Sossio
and the church of Gesú. Between the many Neapolitan
museums, the Archaeological National - who lodge collections
of sculptures, mosaics, paintings and daily objects of
the Antiquity -, and the one of Capodimonte deserve a
special mention, with objects of western and eastern art
of the medieval time.
Pompeii, one of the best archaeological destinies of the
world, arises at 10 km of the Vesubio, the same volcano
that buried it centuries ago. In the center of this large
city, unearthed from the forgetfulness in 1748, we met
with true jewels like the forum, numerous plinths of commemorative
statues and a part of the columnata of Toba.
